FIVE YEARS OF LDRL
Featherstone Rovers and Featherstone Rovers Foundation are proud to celebrate the fifth anniversary of their Learning Disability Rugby League (LDRL) team, a staple of the club’s ongoing commitment to inclusivity and community engagement and a large part of the RFL’s (Rugby Football League) wider push to make sport more accessible for everyone, regardless of ability.

Since its launch in 2020, our LDRL team has given individuals with learning disabilities the opportunity to experience the excitement and camaraderie of rugby league in a safe, supportive, and fun environment.

The partnership between Featherstone Rovers Foundation with the RFL and Community Integrated Care has been instrumental in sustaining and growing this team, ensuring that rugby league continues to be a sport for all. The LDRL sessions focus on participation, skill development, and—most importantly—fun, allowing players to build confidence, form friendships, and be part of the wider Rovers family, both supporting and representing the club.
Speaking on the milestone, Jacob Merrick, Head Coach for Featherstone Rovers Learning Disability Team, said:
“We’re incredibly proud to mark five years of our LDRL team, which has provided so many individuals with the chance to engage in rugby league. Rugby is at the heart of our community in Featherstone, and this initiative ensures that no one is left behind. We look forward to growing the team further and continuing to make a positive impact. I started volunteering at the club at a young age, and one of my first sessions was coaching the LDRL team alongside ex head coach Jim Dyson, awakening the passion of to coach within me and the want to work with such a great team and group of people.”
The team continues to train regularly at the Millennium Stadium, centre of excellence, Tuesday 5pm – 6pm, with sessions open to anyone who wants to take part. As a non-competitive format of rugby league, the emphasis remains on fun, teamwork, and personal development rather than results, ensuring an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere for all involved.
